Digits alternative, compared honestly

AccountsOS vs Digits:
a US ledger and a UK-first AI accountant

Digits is one of the best-known AI-native ledgers, and it is built for US businesses. If you are searching for a Digits alternative because you are not in the US, or because $65 a month is more than you want to pay, this page sets the two side by side.

Checked on 2 Nov 2026. Every Digits fact on this page links to its source.

Digits is an AI-native general ledger for US-based businesses and their accountants, from $65 a month on its Essentials plan, with a 30-day trial. Its own FAQ says it is available only to US-based entities, and it does not file taxes: it exports a tax package for a preparer. AccountsOS is an AI accountant, Finn, working on a real double-entry ledger in 32 countries, from £10 a month for a sole trader or £20 a month for a limited company, with a person reviewing and signing every filing. Digits is ahead on US bank connections and US depth. We are ahead on price, on UK filing, and on where you can use it.

Digits suits you if

  • You are a US-based business or a US accounting firm. Digits only serves US entities, so this is the first question.
  • You want bank and card connections to cover almost any US institution. Digits says its connections reach 12,000+ banks, cards and payroll providers.
  • You want a dashboard-led product with bill pay, invoicing, custom reports and dimensional accounting on the same ledger.
  • You work with a US preparer who will take a tax package from Digits and file on your behalf.

AccountsOS suits you if

  • You are in the UK, or in another market Digits does not serve. Digits is US only; AccountsOS is live in the UK and many other countries.
  • You want Finn to prepare the work and a person (you, or your accountant) to review and sign. MTD VAT is filed from inside the product.
  • You want to talk to your books by chat, voice, WhatsApp, Slack, Telegram or email instead of logging into a dashboard.
  • You want a flat, published price at the low end, or per-client pricing for a practice that does not start at $65.

Is Digits available in the UK?

No. The Digits pricing page states that the service is available only to US-based entities. That one line decides most searches for "digits uk" and "digits accounting alternative" before features come into it. A UK limited company cannot sign up for Digits and use it for its books.

If you are comparing Digits vs Xero or Digits vs QuickBooks, the same point applies: Xero and QuickBooks both run in the UK and file VAT through HMRC's Making Tax Digital, and Digits does not operate there. For UK buyers the real comparison is between Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and the newer AI products. We compare ourselves with the established ones on our Xero and QuickBooks pages.

AccountsOS is live in the UK and in the other markets on our country list. The UK is where our filing is deepest: MTD VAT returns, Companies House accounts and confirmation statements.

Two different ideas of an AI-native accountant

Digits describes its product as an agentic general ledger. It categorises transactions around the clock, flags items for review, runs quality checks, drafts month-end close work and gives you live dashboards for runway, burn and revenue. The product is the ledger and its interface, with an assistant called Ask Digits on top.

AccountsOS is built the other way round. Finn is the product. She does the production work on a real double-entry ledger, you talk to her wherever you already are, and she brings you the exceptions. A person reviews and signs every filing. Neither approach is wrong. If you like to look at a polished dashboard and click into it, Digits is a strong version of that. If you would rather ask a question and get the answer, that is what Finn is for.

Both sit on a real ledger, which matters. Plenty of AI accounting tools wrap an assistant around somebody else's books. Digits and AccountsOS both own the ledger underneath.

Where Digits is ahead, plainly

Bank connections. Digits states coverage of 12,000+ banks, cards and payroll providers in the US. Open banking is not live in AccountsOS yet. Today we take bank data by CSV and PDF statement import, with direct connections to providers such as Mercury, Wise and Stripe. If automatic feeds from every bank are a must-have, this is a real gap.

US depth. Digits is built for one country and it shows: bill pay, invoicing, multi-entity accounting with unlimited entities, and a firm programme with certification and a directory. Our US coverage is newer and narrower than a product that only does the US.

Scale of adoption. Digits cites 7,000+ accountants and business owners on its own site. We do not publish user counts of our own, so we will not set numbers against each other that we cannot show you.

Where AccountsOS is ahead

Reach and filing. Digits does not file taxes, and it serves only the US. AccountsOS files VAT through MTD, is on HMRC's list of MTD VAT software, and e-files accounts and confirmation statements at Companies House. A person reviews and signs each one.

Price at the low end. Digits starts at $65 a month. A sole trader on AccountsOS pays £10 a month, and a limited company £20 a month. In the US our own prices are $12 a month and $24 a month.

Where you talk to it. Finn works in web chat, voice, WhatsApp, Slack, Telegram and email. We also run an MCP server (read and write, 94 tools), so you can query your books from Claude. Digits includes its developer API and MCP on every plan; its site does not say whether the MCP can write.

What each one costs, worked through

Digits prices in US dollars on public plans. AccountsOS prices are shown in the currency of the market. For a US business we show our US price so the comparison is like for like, and for the UK we show sterling. The practice row prices 50 live clients on each side.

Moving between them

If you are in the US and on Digits, there is little reason to leave unless price or channels matter more to you than bank coverage. If they do, export your transactions and chart of accounts as CSV and import them into AccountsOS. Our importer maps arbitrary column layouts with AI, so you do not have to reformat the file first.

If you are in the UK and landed on Digits by searching, the answer is that it will not take you. Start with your bank statements as CSV or PDF, or bring your history across from Xero, QuickBooks or Sage. Finn builds the opening position and asks you about anything she cannot place.

In either direction, run both side by side for a month before you cancel. Check the VAT and year-end numbers against each other, then close the old one.
