Create a read-only token

Sign in at the Starling Developer portal (free), link your Starling account (approved in the Starling app), and create a Personal Access Token with the four read-only scopes.

Paste it into AccountsOS

Settings > Integrations > Starling Bank. We validate the token live, store it encrypted, and the first 90 days of transactions backfill immediately.

Finn takes it from there

Transactions sync daily and categorise on arrival. Incoming payments match invoices and mark them paid. You just review the exceptions.

The questions people ask first

Does AccountsOS connect directly to Starling?

Yes. AccountsOS connects to Starling's own API with a read-only Personal Access Token you create in the Starling Developer portal. No data aggregator sits in between, and unlike Open Banking connections there's no 90-day reconsent cycle: the feed keeps running until you revoke the token. Is the connection read-only?

Completely. The token uses four read-only scopes (accounts, account list, balances, transactions) and none of Starling's payment scopes. AccountsOS can never move your money. The token is stored encrypted and you can revoke it any time from the Starling Developer portal.

How accurate is the AI categorisation for Starling transactions?

Very accurate. Your own bank rules are applied first, then the AI categorises the rest using your company context. Every transaction shows its categorisation reasoning, and anything uncertain is flagged for your review rather than guessed silently.

Can I still import CSV statements instead?

Yes. CSV import with auto-detection for Starling's format is still fully supported if you'd rather not connect the live feed. The direct connection just removes the download-upload loop.

What happens when a client pays an invoice into my Starling account?

The payment arrives in the daily sync (or instantly if you ask Finn to check the bank), gets matched to the open invoice automatically, and the invoice flips to paid. Your P&L and VAT update in the same pass.
