In short

Direct RTI submission to HMRC is coming to AccountsOS. You'll file your Full Payment Submission (FPS) on or before each payday and an Employer Payment Summary (EPS) for Employment Allowance or nil-payment months, straight from AccountsOS to HMRC's Transaction Engine: no exporting a file and re-keying it into Basic PAYE Tools. The submission engine is already built and the IRmark (HMRC's submission fingerprint) is verified against HMRC's own published test data; we're going through HMRC's RTI recognition process now. Today AccountsOS runs payroll, emails payslips, posts to the general ledger and generates the RTI-ready FPS.

vs Basic PAYE Tools

Everything it does

Full Payment Submission (FPS)

  • Prepared for every payday; HMRC requires it on or before each payday
  • Pay, tax, National Insurance and year-to-date figures for every employee
  • Built straight from your payroll run: nothing to re-enter
  • Year-aware: the right schema for the current tax year

Employer Payment Summary (EPS)

  • Claim Employment Allowance
  • Report a nil-payment month so HMRC doesn't expect a payment
  • Recover statutory pay (maternity, paternity, sick)
  • Final submission for the tax year

How submission will work

  • Connect your employer Government Gateway user ID once (stored encrypted)
  • Run payroll, review the figures, press submit
  • Coming soon: AccountsOS signs and sends the submission to HMRC's Transaction Engine
  • You get HMRC's acceptance back, stored against the run for your records

What works today (while recognition completes)

  • Run payroll with PAYE, NI and pension calculated on current thresholds
  • Per-employee payslips emailed automatically
  • Payroll posted to the general ledger (wages, PAYE, NI, pension)
  • RTI-ready FPS generated for your records

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AccountsOS submit RTI to HMRC?

Direct RTI submission is coming soon. The submission engine is built and the IRmark is verified against HMRC's published test vectors; we're completing HMRC's RTI recognition process now. Today AccountsOS generates the RTI-ready FPS and runs your payroll, payslips and ledger: once recognition is granted you'll file the FPS and EPS straight to HMRC from the same place.

What is an FPS and an EPS?

A Full Payment Submission (FPS) tells HMRC what you paid each employee and the tax and National Insurance deducted; it must reach HMRC on or before each payday. An Employer Payment Summary (EPS) reports things that aren't on the FPS: claiming Employment Allowance, a month where you paid no one, or recovering statutory pay.

Is this an alternative to Basic PAYE Tools?

Yes. HMRC's free Basic PAYE Tools makes you key every figure in by hand and can't import a file from other software. AccountsOS already runs the payroll, so when direct submission goes live you file the FPS and EPS without exporting or re-keying anything.

Do I need separate payroll software to file RTI?

No. AccountsOS includes payroll (employees, PAYE/NI/pension calculations, payslips and GL posting), and direct RTI filing is being added on top, so payroll and filing live in one product.

How will AccountsOS connect to HMRC for RTI?

RTI uses your employer Government Gateway user ID and password (the PAYE online login), not the Making Tax Digital connection. You'll enter them once; they're stored encrypted and used only to file your submissions to HMRC's Transaction Engine.

Is RTI part of Making Tax Digital?

No. Real Time Information is HMRC's payroll reporting system and is separate from Making Tax Digital, which covers VAT (live) and Income Tax (from April 2026). AccountsOS already files MTD VAT returns and is adding direct RTI payroll filing.

When will direct RTI submission be available?

It's in HMRC's recognition process now. We'll switch it on as soon as recognition is granted. Until then you can run payroll and generate the RTI-ready FPS in AccountsOS today.
