What Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) says
Rent relates to the business when the premises are used for the activity. Keep the lease and the payment records. Some payments to suppliers carry withholding at source, reported on Form 41; ask your accountant whether it applies to your rent. The lease should name the company as the tenant. A lease in a director's name makes the rent harder to support as a company cost.
When you can claim
- Office or shop rent under a lease in the company's name
- Service charges for the business premises
- Short-term co-working desks
- Rent for a warehouse or storage unit
- Rent for a branch office
- Parking spaces rented for business vehicles
- Rent for a temporary site office during a project
- Rent for a showroom used to display goods for sale
- Maintenance charges set out in the lease
When you cannot claim
- Rent for the owner's private home
- Premises used by another company
- A refundable deposit, which is an asset and not a cost
- Rent for a flat used by a director's family
Good to know
Pro tip: Put the lease in the company's name and pay rent from the company account. Send Finn the lease once. It sets up the rent schedule and flags a month where the payment or the receipt is missing.
Important: If part of a home is used for the business, ask your accountant how much, if any, can be claimed. Keep the receipts for each payment with the lease. A transfer from the company account with the month in the reference is the easiest support.
