MPF Monthly Contributions
Monthly Mandatory Provident Fund contributions must be remitted to the approved MPF trustee by the 10th day after the end of each contribution period (last working day of the month). Late payment attracts a 5% surcharge.
Who this applies to
- All Hong Kong employers with employees aged 18 to 64
- Self-employed persons aged 18 to 64 (contribute based on relevant income)
- Employers with part-time or casual workers employed for 60 or more days
What to file
Contribution remittance to the approved MPF trustee. No form is filed with the MPFA directly; the trustee maintains the records. Employers must provide employees with contribution records (scheme benefit statements) at least annually.
How to file
Via the employer's chosen MPF trustee online portal (HSBC MPF, AIA MPF, Manulife MPF, Sun Life Rainbow MPF, Principal Trust, etc.). Payment by bank transfer or cheque to the trustee.
Payment due
Employer mandatory contributions: 5% of relevant income, maximum HKD 1,500/month per employee. Employee mandatory contributions: withheld from salary and remitted with employer portion. Both due by the 10th of the following month.
Penalties for missing this deadline
5% surcharge on outstanding contributions for late payment. Persistent default: MPFA enforcement action, criminal prosecution (maximum fine HKD 350,000 and imprisonment), and MPFA name-and-shame public register.
Filing checklist
- Calculate each employee's relevant income for the month (salary + commission + bonus + allowances, excluding overtime for some cases)
- Compute 5% employer contribution (cap at HKD 1,500 if relevant income exceeds HKD 30,000)
- Deduct 5% employee contribution from salary (cap at HKD 1,500)
- Submit combined contribution to trustee by the 10th of the following month
- Retain contribution records (trustee statements) for at least 7 years
Documents you'll need
- Monthly payroll records showing each employee's relevant income
- MPF contribution schedule from trustee portal
- Bank transfer confirmation for each month's remittance
Common mistakes to avoid
- Remitting contributions on the last day of the month rather than the 10th of the following month (the deadline is 10 days AFTER the month end)
- Using the wrong 'relevant income' base (regular MPF salary, excluding certain overtime depending on scheme rules, but including most allowances)
- Not enrolling new employees within 60 days of commencement
- Forgetting that employees earning below HKD 7,100/month are exempt from the employee contribution but the employer still contributes 5%
